Women have a hard time asking for what we need, and even when we do, sticking to our guns. But the problem is half of us are walking around drained, exhausted and so depleted that we have no energy left to give to those around us. Here are some tips to carve out space for yourself.
- At the beginning of the week choose 3 hour-long activities and set them into your calendar. Maybe a yoga class or a spinning class. Maybe an hour at night to sew, garden or do something else you enjoy. But pencil it in and keep it as a date.
- Take a breather. Oftentimes we think if we don’t have a full hour, we don’t have enough time to do anything. Not true. Ten minutes is enough to change our mood and boost our health. Take a short walk, sit for 10 minutes and breathe. Or just stop whatever it is you are doing and journal.
- Delegate. I recently decided that paying someone to clean the parts of the house that drive me crazy, yet, I never get to, was worth my sanity. Yes, I have to carve out space in the budget, but I can EASILY forgo a dinner out each month in exchange for a cleaner and more sane home.
- Don’t overbook. The science shows we need time with our spouse, time with our kids, time with our girlfriends. But the problem is we are so good at listening to this advice and overbooking that we forget that alone time is also essential to our health. So instead of a weekly date night with your friends, try once a month. Give yourself permission to say no every once in awhile.
